I recently talked to Craig Allen, president of the US-China Business Council (USCBC), about the impact of US-China trade tensions on foreign companies doing business in China.

In this wide ranging conversation, Allen observed that despite the top line figures suggesting that China-US trade increased in 2022, much of it was driven by increased commodities prices.

He also shared his views about the playing field not being level for both China’s private sector and foreign players when the Chinese government gives preference to state-owned enterprises (SOE) through its 130 industrial policies.

The conversation also touched on US policies that affect its relationship with other countries and regions.

Conversations with players on the ground in China gives me a sense of the real issues that foreign players face in engaging with China’s domestic policies.
